EarthCaching is an offshoot of geocaching,. In geocaching you are given the geographical latitude and longitude coordinates of a hidden "treasure". The difference is that instead of finding a container full of trinkets, an Earthcache is an area of natural interest or beauty.
An EarthCache site is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique natural science feature or aspect of our Earth. Visitors to EarthCache sites can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the Earth's resources, and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth. There are thousands of Earthcache sites listed at www.Earthcaching.com.
Here at Chippokes Plantation we have two Earthcache trails -- a Nature trail and a Historical trail. You can rent a Global Positioning System Receiver (GPSr) and a guide book for the trail you choose at the Visitor Center. Each booklet has the coordinates of several points of interest. When you arrive at the latitude and longitude coordinates provided, the guide book gives you information about that particular location. Cool!!
